Editor’s note: Thank you for joining us for this edition of GeoInspirations. Today our distinguished columnist, Dr. Joseph Kerski, features Bleys Andromeda Focht.

Bleys has an interesting name and an interesting job. Bleys faces political and physical challenges working at the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, has a unique pathway in getting there, and as the title implies, reminds us in several key ways to stay open to new ideas. He uses UAV and other geotechnologies and makes site visits to beautiful places. One of his phrases that stood out for me was “If you knew everything about your job, it wouldn’t be enjoyable.” which reflects his philosophy of being a lifelong learner. His work in environmental mitigation and mining fits squarely in a discussion with your colleagues or students about energy sources in harsh terrain, real decisions that must be made, and how we can chart a future. I am sure his perspective will inspire others.
